Highway 97 fatal in West Kelowna

A portion of Highway 97 through West Kelowna, between Daimler Road and Bartley Road, remains closed this morning to allow investigators of both the RCMP and the BC Coroners Services to probe the circumstances surrounding an early morning collision that claimed a life.

Minutes before 2 a.m., emergency crews rushed to the scene of a serious injury collision in the northbound lanes of Highway 97 at the intersection of Bartley Road in West Kelowna. First responders arrived to find a passenger vehicle heavily damaged, after being seemingly struck from behind by a commercial transport truck and trailer unit.

“Sadly, the driver of the white Hyundai Tucson was pronounced deceased at the scene,” states Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP. “His lone passenger suffered serious injuries and was rushed  to hospital.”

The driver of the semi tractor trailer unit remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the police investigation.

West Kelowna RCMP continue to support the RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services (COTS) have now taken lead of the ongoing police investigation into the collision. “One of our priorities at this time is establishing an identity for the deceased, and properly notifying his next of kin,” says Cpl. O’Donaghey.
