Is downtown Kelowna safe?

Just days after an altercation that left a 23 year-old man dead of stab wounds, the City of Kelowna is ramping up its security downtown.

Deputy City Manager Joe Creron says four new RCMP members and four new bylaw officers have been added to patrol the streets seven days a week.

"People should feel safe and enjoy our downtown. We will deal with those people who are criminals. I know some people will say we are dealing with the homeless...no. We are dealing with those people who are doing criminal activity. The homeless people, we are trying to find various resources to deal with those situations."

Creron says the cost of the added enforcement is in the neighbourhood of $400 thousand dollars.

In a citizen survey in 2017, 90% felt safe in downtown Kelowna.
