Man sentenced to 90 days in jail for molesting minor

A Kelowna man has been sentenced to time in jail after sexually assaulting a minor.

The 48-year-old man, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim, sexually touched the underage boy last May, while they watched a movie at the man's house. He also tried to force the boy to touch him.

The next day, the man turned himself to police and pleaded guilty to sexual interference of a person under 16 years old at arraignment.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced the man to 90 days in jail to be served on weekends and 3 years probation.

During her sentencing, the judge said the offence was a breach of trust that has had a significant impact on the underage victim. She said the mitigating factors were that the man had no previous criminal record and turned himself in right away, expressing remorse. A doctor's report found the man at a low-risk to reoffend.

The family of the victim left the courtroom in tears following the sentencing.

The man is also prohibited from contacting the victim and the victim's family, and will have to register with the sex offender registry for the next 10 years.
