Peachland council votes to allow flowers on memorial bench

The mother of a Peachland teen stabbed to death in 2011 is happy council will allow her to continue to place flowers on her daughter's memorial bench.

Charrie Fichter has been placing silk flowers on the bench honouring her late daughter Ashlee Hyatt for over 5 years, but earlier this year city staff began to remove the flowers, citing a by-law that prohibits them.

Yesterday, October 25, council voted 4-3 to allow Fichter to place flowers on the bench. Two weeks ago council defeated the motion with a vote of 3-3, but because Mayor Cindy Fortin wasn't there due to a family emergency, the matter was revisited.

Fichter is relieved the 8 month long battle, is now over.

“I think they said this is the final decision, that it wasn’t coming back whether it was no or yes so I think it’s over I don’t think I have anything to worry about,” she said “I’m just going to do the same thing I’ve been doing for 5 and a half years, it’s not going to be any different”.

Fichter says placing the flowers on the bench makes her feel like she’s still taking care of her daughter. She says she most recently placed flowers on Saturday: white and purple ones, which she says Ashlee liked.
