RCMP to ramp-up enforcement this long weekend
The May long weekend is the traditional start of vacation season - and the RCMP warn it's also the start of their summer traffic enforcement season.
Police say speed is still the leading cause of car crash fatalities in BC, killing about 94 people across the province each year.
In 2016, RCMP handed out 1,034 speeding tickets over the May long weekend, with 143 of those for excessive speed.
Police say they'll be watching for other risky behaviours as well, like impaired driving and distracted driving.
Last year, 76 tickets were issued to drivers for using an electronic device, 113 were cited for alcohol and drug infractions, and 34 tickets were handed out for unsafe passing.
This long weekend falls during national Road Safety Week.
