RCMP volunteers watch for speeders
RCMP volunteers from across the Central Okanagan gathered in Kelowna Thursday morning to perform a Speed Watch Blitz.
Over the course of two hours, they monitored the speeds of nearly 3,000 vehicles while stationed at Clifton Road, Dehart Road, Upper Canyon Drive, and Gordon Drive.
Just over 950 of those vehicles were seen travelling over the speed limit, with 46 of those said to have been driving at least 21 km/hr over the speed limit.
Over two dozen vehicles had their license plates caught on camera for either excessive speeding or texting behind the wheel. Those offenders can expect to receive a letter from the RCMP in the next few weeks.
The information gathered by the Speed Watch volunteers will help traffic officers plan enforcement operations in the region going forward.
In addition to cracking down on speeding drivers, in the months of April and May, Kelowna traffic officers removed 64 impaired drivers from the streets. They also handed out 97 violation tickets and 40 distracted driving fines during that time.
