Search Continues for Missing Senior, Okanagan Lake
Searchers continue to scour the Kelowna shorelines of Okanagan Lake in search of a missing elderly man yesterday.
RCMP launched a full-scale search of the waters Friday afternoon, after they received report of an overdue kayaker last seen on the waters of Okanagan Lake.
71-year-old Kelowna resident, Zygmunt Janiewicz entered the lake around 2:30 p.m., from the shoreline in the 3000-block of Abbott St. and failed to return as scheduled.
“An abandoned surf ski personal water craft and personal floatation device, similar to the ones being used by Mr. Janiewicz were recovered along the shore near Watt Road,” stated Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.
The search was suspended Friday evening and resumed this morning.
“A search and rescue helicopter has once again been utilized during this morning’s search, supported by boats on the water and even paddle board users,” said O’Donaghey.
Today, West Kelowna RCMP launched their vessel to aid in the search.
While investigators have expanded their search across the lake into Green Bay, in West Kelowna, along a route they believe the man would often travel.
Zygmunt Janiewicz was reportedly last seen wearing a pair of black pants, a yellow jacket and a white hat.
Anyone with any information is asked to immediately contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
