Should Kelowna be concerned about another case of the measles in Vancouver

There are now three confirmed cases of measles in Vancouver.

The measles virus is very contagious and immunization has proven to work. But, should we be concerned about the Vancouver outbreak?

Interior Health nurse Nicole Hall says yes, "It spreads easily through the air. You don't even have to be in a confined air space, it could be in a large air space. You could breathe in the virus or touch a surface containing the virus and Vancouver is not that far away."

Hall recommends that if you're not sure of your immunization status, you should consult your doctor.

The measles immunization rate in the Central Okanagan is about 85 percent. Interior Health has a target of 90 or 95 percent. Hall says there are still many people who could be immunized but for whatever reason, aren't.
