Spencer makes taking meds stress-free

Kelowna based company Catalyst Health Care has begun rolling out a device that aims to make the routine of taking medication easy and convenient.

The Spencer in-home medication dispenser is a machine that alerts a patient when it is time to take their medication, then with the push of a button, dispenses the correct dosage.

The Glenmore Pharmasave is the first place to offer the devices to rent in Kelowna, and owner Craig Toftenson says test runs for the device have been successful.

“We’re actually having a lot of success with people who have Parkinson’s Disease,” says Toftenson. “Mainly because a lot of those patients need to take medications every 4 hours, and it’s easy to get off track. And when you’re track with Parkinson’s medication, you can feel it right away.”

Toftenson says the Spencer has already had a profoundly positive effect on his own family.

“My father-in-law has Parkinson’s, and he was a little bit resistant to try (the spencer), but it’s really made a difference, and his symptoms have improved. He feels better, knowing that he’s taking his medication at the right time.”

Every Spencer comes with an app that allows both caregivers and pharmacists to monitor the dosage being dispensed by the device, which can provide some peace of mind for family members worried about their loved ones taking their meds regularly.
