Two fires in Kelowna to start the new year

Kelowna fire crews were called to a couple of fires on Monday, January 2nd.

A blaze at a home on Verde Vista Road in the Kirschner Mountain area forced three people to flee at around 8:00 pm.

No-one was hurt, but the blaze destroyed the home - the cause is under investigation.

And just after midnight - firefighters reponded to a 9-1-1 call about smoke in a unit at 12-67 Discovery Avenue at UBCO - the fire was caused by a mattress and bedding up against a baseboard heater.

The building's sprinkler system doused the blaze - no-one was hurt, but the 2nd floor apartment and 6 units below suffered water damage.

There were about 25 students in the building at the time of the fire.
