Understaffed West Kelowna Fire Hall Closes for a Day

West Kelowna Fire Hall #32 had to close its doors on Saturday, due to understaffing.

While firefighters normally work 10 to 14 hour shifts, some of the firefighters at the hall have seen 38 hour days.

According to Jason Brolund, the West Kelowna Fire Chief, there was a plan in place if disaster struck.

“We have a fully staffed fire hall in West Bank, as well as other paid on-call firefighters at other stations, who would all work together to ensure there would be a fire department response if need be," said Brolund.

He said 10 new members will begin training for eight new positions and two currently vacant positions in September.

They reopened again on Sunday.
