Salmon Arm RCMP investigate a shooting at a Salmon Arm Church

One man is in police custody after a fatal shooting in Salmon Arm this afternoon. Salmon Arm RCMP received the call shortly after 10:30 a.m. regarding a possible shooting at the Church of Christ on 5th Avenue SW.  Authorities said the suspect entered the church and allegedly shot two churchgoers that were attending a bible worship service. A 25-year-old man was taken into custody after being wrestled to the ground by a number of the parishioners and a rifle was seized.

Police said one man, Gordon Parmenter, 78 was declared dead on scene while another parishioner was taken to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops via an air ambulance in stable condition.

"The guy was a great guy," said Donald Krebs. "He was hard worker. It's so hard to believe and so sad that this happened."

He said Parmenter and his wife are "fantastic people" who contributed a lot to the community.

Salmon Arm RCMP, with the assistance of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit, are conducting the investigation, and Victim Services has been called in to assist with people impacted by the incident. RCMP said they do not believe the shooting was religiously motivated and that the suspect was known to at least one of the victims. RCMP said charges are pending against Matrix Savage Gathergood, the 25-year-old alleged suspect. Gathergood’s first court appearance will be on April 23 in Salmon Arm.
