Reunited at Memorial Cup
He wouldn't miss it for the world.
Kelowna resident Wayne Pansegrau is working his 6th Memorial Cup tournament after being hired by the Canadian Hockey League to oversee the quality of the playing surface at the prestigious event.
His first was in Kelowna in 2004, when under head coach Marc Habschied and assistant Jeff Truitt, the Rockets won the title.
Fast forward 16 years. Habschied and Truitt are back again, this time as the coaching staff of the WHL champion Prince Albert Raiders.
“Jeff is a little bit nicer to me than Marc. Marc tends to give me a hard time, which is fair enough. It was great in 2004 working with Marc and getting his criticism."
The hope is Pansegrau is again hired to oversee the ice at 2020 Memorial Cup in Kelowna next May.
“If Habscheid leaves here happy, I’ve done my job”, Pansegrau added with a chuckle.
The tournanment starts Friday in Halifax when the Prince Albert Raiders face the host Halifax Mooseheads.
