Rob Johnson's replacement found at UBCO

Tom Huisman has been appointed as UBC Okanagan's new Director, Athletics and Recreation.

He joins UBC Okanagan with more than 25 years of senior sport and university leadership experience that followed his own athletic career as a provincial soccer player and varsity distance and cross-country runner.

Originally from Winnipeg and a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Huisman held the positions of Executive Director of the Coaches Association and Provincial Coaching Coordinator for Sport Manitoba before moving to the Ottawa region as the Director of Operations for Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U Sports) for more than 15 years.

Most recently, Huisman was the Manager of Interuniversity Sport Programs at Carleton University, helping guide Carleton sport teams to multiple National and Provincial Championships.

Huisman, whose appointment becomes effective May 1st, takes over from Rob Johnson, who held that position for over 10 years and has been with the university for over 25 years.

Johnson was instrumental in UBC Okanagan's 2010 bid for inclusion in Canadian Interuniversity Sports (now known as U-Sports), the highest level of university sports in the country.

Johnson remains at the university in the faculty of education.
