Rockets face stiff competition

The Kelowna Rockets will face stiff competition from Kamloops, Victoria and Lethbridge to host the 2020 Memorial Cup.

All four teams sent a letter into the Western Hockey League office last week stating they are interested in hosting the 10 day tournament.

Rockets General Manager Bruce Hamilton says the Hurricanes bid, while taking some by surprise, shouldn't be taken lightly.

"They will have a good opportunity. They will have a real good hockey team. The event has been in Regina, Brandon, Saskatoon and Red Deer since it was last in British Columbia.  I am hoping regionally it works and one of us in British Columbia gets it".

All four teams will make presentations before league governors in early October.

"We have to go about our business of preparing the most competitive bid.  You have to accommodate the amount of people that come and the standard that the CHL expects. We are fortunate that we have a number of real nice hotels that can accommodate the crowds that comes with an event like this", Hamilton added.

Kelowna and Kamloops are the only teams to host the Memorial Cup.

Kelowna in 2004 and Kamloops in 1995.
