Belle River Atoms to Host OHF Championship

The Belle River Jr Canadiens are hosting the Ontario Hockey Federation's Atom Major 'AA' Championship this weekend at the Rock Arena inside the Atlas Tube Centre.

The host Canadiens will be joined by the Leaside Flames from the GTHL, the Northern Association's Soo Jr Greyhounds, the Caledon Hawks from the OMHA, and the London Jr Knights representing the Alliance.

Belle River head coach Daryl Smith says the Jr Greyhounds and Hawks are both very strong clubs.

"Sault Ste Marie and Caledon are probably the odds on favourites coming in.  We played Caledon early on this year, and they are a well disciplined and pretty fast skating team."

Smith tells AM800 Sports the organizing committee's number one priority was to make this a memorable experience for the kids.
"This is about memories more than anything else and the kid's have been excited all season long.  We knew we had it last  August and we've been gearing up for it all season and everybody's  really excited."

The tournament opens Friday at 10 a.m., although the host Canadiens don't play their first game until 2:30 p.m. when they take on Leaside.

The Canadiens will also play the Soo at 7:30 p.m.
