Eugenie Bouchard said she was lacking confidence after being bounced from the Rogers Cup in the first round.
Her latest setback is a straight-sets loss to 21-year-old qualifier Donna Vekic of Croatia. Bouchard fell 6-3, 6-4 yesterday afternoon at the Aviva Centre's centre court in Toronto.
Vekic broke the 70th-ranked Bouchard six times and won 17-of-27 first-serve points. Bouchard had 19 unforced errors in the first set.
Vekic will face third-seed Angelique Kerber in the second round.
Canadian Denis Shapovalov advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup after rallying to defeat Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4.
It's the second-straight year that Shapovalov has advanced into the tournament's second round.
