The Brain Injury Association of Windsor and Essex County is up for a major award.

The local association has been nominated for the "Community Brain Injury Association of the Year" by the Ontario Brain Injury Association and PIA Law.

Executive Director Anna Jurak says it's the first time the local association has been nominated for the award.

She says the criteria for the award varies but does include strong advocacy, positive outcomes and years of service.

"All our programs are designed to support the people who have acquired a brain injury and their family and friends," says Jurak.  "Our other must important aspect is promoting the prevention of injury especially brain injury among young people."

She says the association was caught off-guard by the nomination.

"This is really quite an unexpected so it's a good recognition of something we're doing right," says Jurak.  "We've done a lot more new things that are really getting out there and making people aware that we are available to help them."

The award recognizes associations that provide exemplary service to the brain injury community and find innovative means to support brain injury survivors and their families.

The local association is up against the Peterborough Region, Quinte District, Sudbury and District, Waterloo Wellington and Hamilton.

Voting begins on August 6th and runs until September 6th.

The winner will be announced on September 11th.
