Canadians Welcome to Volunteer at the Detroit Grand Prix

Officials at the Detroit Grand Prix are putting out the call for volunteers.

1,100 people are needed to handle jobs like circuit marshals, customer relations and ticket scanners for the annual race on Belle Isle.

Grand Prix spokesperson Merrill Cain says they still need quite a few people.

"We're well on our way, we've got about 500 volunteers that have already signed up but it's getting to be about that time when we try to get that last few hundred folks who sign up with us and are excited about working at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear," says Cain.

He says they do make special accommodation for Canadian volunteers.

"We work very closely with the folks at the city of Windsor, as well as at the border, to create a pre-approved list for people to cross the border," says Cain. "So we work with them, get everyone's name, circulate a list to them and get any kind of documentation they might need to make it a quick and easy process for them to come over to Belle Isle."

The fee to be a volunteer is US$15 up to the end of the day Friday, February 1, 2019 but increases to US$20 after that.

Cain says you get a lot for the money.

"That fee really accounts for the uniform, the food on race weekend, access to some pre and post race parties. We create a lapel pin and a patch for everyone. So that's really what that fee goes for," he says.

The Detroit Grand Prix is set for May 31 to June 2.
