The city along with the mission announced the sale Friday afternoon at a joint news conference.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says the mission is buying the building on Ouellette Avenue and the parking lot behind the main branch for $3.6-million.
Dilkens says the mission offered almost exactly the appraised value of both properties.
"It's a total of 3.6 million dollars, $3.2 for the building, $400,000 for the parking lot so they're right in line with the appraisals," says Dilkens. "City council and the library board both needed to improve these agreements of purchase and sale there were two because they're two separate properties."

He adds a new central branch will remain in the downtown core but a location has not been set.
"We have several options in mind," says Dilkens. "The board has discussed several options. We're not going to put those on the table yet until we hon in probably on the most appropriate location but let's just say it's going to stay downtown. We're looking at options that include city ownership buildings to try minimize costs."
The main branch is located at 850 Ouellette Avenue between Erie and Elliott.
The sale closes at the end of June 2019.
