Devonshire Mall Looking At Replacement Options For Sears

Devonshire Mall in Windsor is already looking at a number of replacement options for Sears.

A hearing is set for Friday as Sears Canada is applying for court approval to liquidate all of its remaining stores and assets including the one at the mall.

Devonshire Mall General Manager Chris Savard says it's still early in the process.

"I think most landlords have been looking at whatever options might be available to them, in the event this would happen," says Savard. "Not unlike this we're looking at a number of replacement options but as you can imagine there are certainly a number of hurdles to clear as it's still early in the process."

They're in a unique position because the actual department store space is owned by Sears, not the mall.

"Sears is our neighbour, not our tenant," explains Savard. "So as I mentioned, there's a number of legal hurdles that we're going to kind of work through in the coming weeks and months to look at what our replacement options will be for that space."

Savard adds that while he's not willing to get into specifics, he's confident they will be able to find a suitable replacement for Sears.
