Discarded Cigarette Causes Apartment Fire in Leamington

Leamington Fire and Rescue is reminding residents to watch where they butt-out after a potted plant torched the balcony of an apartment building over the weekend.

First responders were called to a 4th floor unit of an apartment complex on Camolot Ave.  around 8pm Saturday — it was determined that a discarded cigarette caused a potted plant to go up in flames.

A tweet from Leamington fire says potted plants should not be used as ashtrays because most organic material, including soil for house plants, will burn when dry.

Investigators say the blaze caused $11,000 damage. The fire was contained to the exterior, but the apartment sustained water and smoke damage.

No one was injured.
