Essex Cracks Down on Derelict Homes

The Town of Essex is paying extra attention to property owners who don't keep their homes and businesses up to snuff.

A new by-law officer has been hired that will focus on education and enforcment of the town's Property Standards By-law.

It includes grass cutting, building exteriors, lighting, garbage and vegetation.

Director Development Services Lori Chadwick says town council wanted to take an 'action oriented' approach to the issue.

"Although we would like to take that education first approach, the additional staff capacity would ensure that we have additional resources to enforce bylaws," says Chadwick.

She says it's about keeping your property in good condition.

"At this time in the summer, a big focus is on weeds, grass and over grown grass," says Chadwick.

Chadwick says the new by-law officer, Jake Morassut started in May and will be very much on the ground engaging and educating residents.

As part of the education aspect, the town has posted an online feature highighting the Property Standards By-law.
