Maidstone Tomato Processing Company Pleads Guilty
A Maidstone tomato processing company has pleaded guilty to mislabeling its cans.
During a preliminary hearing Monday, the Thomas Canning Corporation pleaded guilty to the charge and received a fine of $40,000.
Charges against the owner William Thomas were withdrawn.
"Mr.Thomas is a very good man, a very productive member of the community and has employed people for five decades," says defence lawyer Laura Joy.
Some cans were labeled organic, when they weren't organic.
"Some of those labels got mixed up so that's what happened," says Joy. "But please remember the public was never in danger, this wasn't a situation like the regulations on meat."
The company did file for receivership in July 2017.
