Essex County OPP Canine Maximus is getting the credit for tracking down a suspected car thief in Lakeshore.

On August 31 at around 1am OPP received a call from the Windsor police for assistance in locating a stolen Transit Windsor vehicle that was being tracked by a GPS device.

Officers spotted the vehicle near County Rd 25 and the 401 and when they approached the suspect drove into a farmer's field and then fled on foot.

The Canine Unit was dispatched and a short time later the driver was found by Maximus hiding in a bean field.

The suspect was treated at the scene for a dog bite sustained during the arrest.

Steven Bene, 27, of Windsor is charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000.

He'll appear in court later this month.
