Mayor McNamara Questions Latest Census Figures
Tecumseh's mayor is questioning the latest census figures saying they don't make sense.
The data released this week found Tecumseh's population dropped by 1.6% from 2011 to last year.
300 fewer people call Tecumseh home.
But Mayor Gary McNamara says the numbers don't add up because there have been 150 new homes built in town in the last 18 months and a 59 unit condo.
"I don't think we build empty houses," says McNamara."If you take an average of three per household, how can your population drop by 300."
He also points out there were 14-15 new businesses in town in the last year.
McNamara says there are financial consequences to a population drop because the revenue from the federal gas tax money is based on population.
He says the town has to do a better job to convince its residents of the importance of filling out the census form.
