MoneySense Ranks LaSalle Tops In Its' Best Places To Live In Canada' Report
The best place to live in Windsor-Essex according to MoneySense magazine is the town of LaSalle.
It has published its 2018 'best places to live in Canada' study which ranks 415 communities across the country.
It looks at property values, net household income, taxes, crime, weather, amenities and transit.
LaSalle ranked the best in this area at 80, while Amherstburg was 331.
LaSalle Mayor Ken Antaya says it re-enforces the town's direction.
"It sort of elevates the approach we are taking in relation to developing the town and making sure that the things we do are just not, I hate to call them, fluffy things," says Antaya. "We want to make sure the things that we are doing is making sure the reserves are high, the debt is low and infrastructure is taken care of."
He adds the addition of transit, which began in September 2017, also helped its ranking.
Meanwhile, Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says the ranking is disappointing, but residents love the town.
"Talking to most people in Amherstburg, they love where they live and frankly how MoneySense ranks it, they couldn't care less."
DiCarlo points out Amherstburg residents love the heritage, historical value of the town, the small town charm and beautiful waterfront.
He says the town can't help its geography.
"LaSalle and Tecumseh that did better, if you read through the whole study, they do better because they are attached to Windsor and they have access to transit."
Other local rankings include:
- Lakeshore #127
- Tecumseh #131
- Windsor #215
- Kingsville #229
- Essex #282
- Leamington #309
