Mosquitoes In Windsor-Essex Test Negative For Zika Virus
The mosquitoes known to transmit the Zika virus has been found in Windsor-Essex and have tested negative for the disease.
Two adult "Aedes albopictus" or Asian tiger mosquitoes were found in the area in May.
After the discovery of the species in the area in 2016, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit enhanced its surveillance.
Last year, three of the mosquito species were identified and also tested negative for both the Zika and West Nile Virus.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajit Ahmed says the discovery of the mosquito means people need to continue to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites.
The Asian tiger mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters, with peaks in the early morning and late afternoon.
