Officials Predict A Busy Horse Racing Season In Leamington
The local horse racing industry is excited about the upcoming season which begins today in Leamington.
Tom Bain with the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association says it kicks off 13 Sundays of horse racing in August, September and October.
This is the fifth year at Leamington Raceway and Bain says it has grown every year, with some Sundays last year seeing more than 1,000 people.
"Our betting has certainly shown a real increase, we averaged over $32,000 last year per racing card and on two or three occasions, our total bet was over $40,000," says Bain.
He says horse people also are investing back into the industry. "We see stables coming back again, former horse people buying horses recreating their stables and getting back into the business."
Bain adds the association has a meeting this month with the new government to discuss a possible return of slots to the raceway.
The gates open at 12:30pm with the first race at 1:30pm. The last race is at 4:30 p.m.
