ONA Local 8 President Receives Nurse of the Year Award

She may currently be on the picket line, but that didn't stop her from receiving the 2019 Lois A. Fairley Nurse of the Year Award.

President of the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) Local 8, Barb Deter is the recipient of the honour which recognizes excellence in nursing care.

Deter is the local bargaining unit president which represents striking public health unit nurses and has been a nurse for 46 years and worked at Hotel Dieu Grace, at the VON and then at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

"I love the challenges and I love my 86 women that I represent every day. There are no words that can express what this means to me, thank you so much," says Deter. "My heart is truly touched by all of this, I feel so honoured to receive an award for something I do every day and love it. I love being a nurse."

She says she is honoured to follow in Lois Fairley's footsteps with her union work.

"Kinda ironic isn't it that she led and was the president of the Ontario Nurses Association and I'm the bargaining unit president here in Windsor."

One of Deter's nominators described her as a leader, mentor and advocate for both her fellow nurses and clients.

Lois Fairley was a graduate of Grace Hospital in 1955, where she served until her retirement in 1993. She passed away in July 2007.
