OPP Asking Public To Use Caution As Road Conditions Worsen Overnight
The OPP are appealing to motorists to stay off roadways or if necessary to commute this evening to slow down and drive with extreme caution.
Area roadways are treacherous in many locations due to ice, drifting snow, and diminished visibility. Officers have responded to more than 20-collisions today including five tractor trailer involved collisions on Hwy 401 between Windsor and Tilbury, Ont.
Constable Ed Sanchuk rode in a salt truck on Hwy. 401 today — he says drivers need to give road crews space.
"I can tell you the weather is deteriorating as we speak," says Sanchuk. "We're doing about 60 km/h in the middle east-bound lane and we're just asking people to slow down."
He tells AM800 News accidents are avoidable, drivers should plan ahead so they don't have to rush, or stay home if they don't need to go out.
"We're just asking people to slow down, there are a lot of people in a rush these days" explains Sanchuk "However with the weather deteriorating we don't want you to end up in the ditch or involved in a collision"
Anyone needing road or weather information can tune into AM800 News or call 511.
