OPP Conduct Move Over Enforcement Blitz

The Ontario Provincial Police are warning drivers to move over.

They are doing a targeted enforcement blitz of Ontario's Move Over Law during the Civic Day long weekend from August 2-5.

Last year, the OPP laid 1,891 charges against drivers who failed to slow down and move over — marking one of the highest number of annual OPP charges for the offence since it was first created in 2003.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique says there have been close to 700 incidents in the past five years where an OPP vehicle was struck by another vehicle while parked or stopped by the road.

The law requires drivers to slow down and move over, if safe to do so, for all tow trucks, police, ambulance and fire emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated.

The OPP have laid more than 9,000 Move Over charges in the past five years.
