Praise For Plans To Close East Windsor Schools

A proposal to close two older elementary schools and replace them with a new consolidated school is getting generally favourable reviews.

The Greater Essex County District School Board held its first public meeting Wednesday evening on its review of three schools in east Windsor as it tries to address empty school spaces and aging infrastructure.

Eastwood Public School, Parkview Public School and Forest Glade Public School are part of the review.

The proposal would see Eastwood and Parkview closed with the students attending a newly built school.

Nikki Gray has a daughter at Eastwood and thinks a new school is a good idea. "I don't think it will be too bad, especially if it's not the open concept any more. Going back to like a standard classroom I think would be great."

The school board's Superintendent of Accommodations, Todd Awender, feels the first public meeting was a positive start to the process. "At least in this point in time, there hasn't been any pushback. I do speak with the principals of the schools and they're saying the same things, that the community seems pretty positive about it and haven't had any pushback themselves either."

Awender says the proposed changes would see projected utilization rate of 97-percent in 2017 and 86-percent by 2026.
