Public School Board Cancels U.S Field Trips

The Greater Essex County District School Board does not want a repeat of what happened after 9-11.

The board has cancelled a handful of school trips to the U.S due to safety and equity concerns.

There were some school trips scheduled for this month and another trip to Washington in April that are affected.

"That trip has been diverted from the Washington area because at the same time, it is anticipated about half a million people will be in Washington taking part in a massive march and protest," says board Superintendent of Education Clara Howitt.

Speaking on AM800's the Lynn Martin Show, Howitt says with the recent executive order from the Trump administration, there has been some confusion on what would happen to students at the border.

"We are a board that services students from a whole host of countries from around the world and we celebrate that diversity within our board,"says Howitt.  "The experience 16-17 years ago is that students were turned away."

The decision was made by the school board's administration and did not require trustee approval.
