Racist Rant An Anomaly, Multicultural Council
The Director of Program and Development at the Multicultural Council of Windsor-Essex believes a racist rant was an outlier.
A B.C. woman went off on a pair of men at a Lethbridge, Alberta restaurant hurling racial slurs at them.
Fred Francis of the Multicultural Council doubts that kind of tirade would happen in Windsor and be tolerated.
He thought the rant was horrible and couldn't believe someone could be that brazen.
He told AM800 listeners on the Lynn Martin Show that doesn't mean Windsor-Essex is perfect.
"Everything's relative, yes, no country's perfect. Does racism exist everywhere, but relatively speaking Canada is a more welcoming than most places in the world"
Francis believes this region has a very diverse history.
"Windsor's a city built in a large part by immigrants and others as well obviously. But we're a nation of immigrants, we're a nation of First Nation peoples, we're a nation of english and french, bilingualism, we're a multicultural nation and I think Windsor really does show that"
He says people immigrating here often come from horrific situations and feel like they've hit the jackpot when they get here.
The woman who launched the rant has apologized, but has also been fired from her job at a car dealership.
