Spirit of Ramadan Food Drive Exceeds its Goal

The Windsor Islamic Council is thanking the community for another successful food drive.

With a goal of 1,000 bags, the Share the Spirit of Ramadan Food Drive at Devonshire Mall on June 2nd, collected more than 1,300 bags of food to be distributed to those in need throughout Windsor-Essex.

This is the 14th year for the fundraiser and coordinator Sousan Khaled believes this was the biggest collection ever.

"I think with the busyness of this weekend being the last weekend before the end of Ramadan, is what made it a lot more busy, it's like pre-Christmas right, right now," she says. Adding, "This is definitely an order from God that we feel the self-restraint and we become closer to him in the process. Naturally when you are closer to him you want to serve him and his creation and the charities we are going to be serving this year have been amazing."

Khaled says an incident Sunday morning during the setup of the event helped to reinforce the purpose behind it.

"A Caucasian old man came up to my sister and said to her 'what's going on here today' and she said we are doing a food drive and he said 'oh it's Ramadan' and she got excited and he said 'isn't that the month you kill people'. So to start it off that way, just gave us that boast that you have to push forward through the hate and do good."

Tuesday is the final day of Ramadan.
