Talks to Begin with Ontario High School Teachers

Negotiations will begin next month between the province and Ontario's high school teachers.

Ontario Education Minister Lisa Thompson says the government asked teachers' unions to start early 'good faith bargaining' to make sure there is enough time for students to be in class in September.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation has taken up the invitation, which means the initial meetings will take place in the next 15 days.

OSSTF President Harvey Bischof expects bargaining to be difficult.

The province has announce it is increasing class sizes for Grades 4 and higher, mandating e-learning courses and has also reduced per-student funding to boards.

Minister Thompson is hoping the other teachers unions follow suit.

The contract for teachers and education workers expire at the end of August.
