UPDATE: Crime Stoppers Targeting Fentanyl Dealers
Crime Stoppers of Windsor and Essex County has made fentanyl its new target.
The organization has partnered up with police services from around the region in an effort to curb the increasing number of fentanyl related deaths in the province.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $1000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of individuals responsible for trafficking the drug.
Speaking on AM800's The Lynn Martin Show, Windsor Police Sergeant Steve Betteridge says there are too many lives at risk because of this drug.
"The goal here, and why the police would back something like this, is anything to fight this problem is a step in the right direction," says Betteridge. "Our biggest number one goal is public awareness regarding Fentanyl and the extremely dangerous aspects that are associated with this potentially fatal drug.
Just a couple of grams of Fentanyl can kill and the drug is blamed for three deaths in Windsor last year.
Over 500 people have died in Ontario over the past five years due to overdosing on the drug.
To help fund this new initiative, Crime Stoppers is encouraging businesses to participate in its Business Plaque Program.
