VIDEO: Fire on Zalev Brothers Scrapyard Property Out

A fire in and around Zalev Brothers Scrapyard is now under control.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Service was called to the yard just west of Howard Ave. on Grand Marais Rd. E. at around 2pm Wednesday after several fires had broken out.

A dark plume of smoke could be seen for kilometres as a field behind Futura Tool was in flames and there are reports of windows at the rear of a nearby Ivy Rose Motel being blown out.

Deputy Chief Jamie Waffle tells CTV News there were three separate grass fires between Titan Tool and Zalev's — resulting in a large number of fire crews being deployed inside the Zalev compound and several others being allocated to locations outside the fence.

“One of those grass fires in the yard of Zalev's got into the roof of one of the structures,” says Waffle, who goes onto say there are no environmental concerns despite the contents of the scrapyard.

There was a report that someone was caught in the middle of the fire trying to put it out.

“They were safely removed from that by the crews,” says Waffle. “No injuries, no reported injuries at this time.”

Witnesses tell CTV Windsor the fire came dangerously close to the Ivy Rose Motel.

“I was literally watching TV and then see the whole back window turn like red,” says witness Steve Hermiz.

Waffle attributes the quick spread of the blaze to Mother Nature.

“We're not sure where it started but as you can see we got a lot of wind today,” says Waffle. “We don't know the cause yet. That's to be determined yet.”

Zalev Brothers Co. is a location of Ferrous Processing and Trading in Windsor that features a certified public scale for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals, according to their website.

The cause and origin point remain under investigation.
