VIDEO: New Canadians Sworn-in on Canada Day in Amherstburg

The town of Amherstburg celebrated Canada's 152nd birthday at Fort Malden by welcoming 39 new citizens to Essex County.

Ali Al-Shammari, his eight-year-old sister Ruqayah and 12-year-old brother Hussein shared their official welcome as Canadians on Monday.

The 16-year-old Kennedy Secondary School student and his siblings came to Windsor from Iraq five years ago.

"Feels great, you know it's a new thing and a good experience, great weather," he says.

Ali's father Mohammad is already a citizen, and is proud to see his kids make it official too.

"I'm happy today ... I chose Canada because it's a good country and a free country, I'm just happy today," he says.

In total, 39 people from 19 different countries were sworn in as Canadian Citizens in Amherstburg on Canada Day.
