VIDEO: Officials in France Say Rectangular Towers of Notre Dame Will be Saved

According to the Paris fire chief, the Notre Dame Cathedral's landmark rectangular towers have been saved from a Monday evening fire that caused horrific damage.

The massive blaze which has been burning for hours has already obliterated the landmark spire and most of the world-famous cathedral which has stood for in the heart of the city since the 12th century.

Well over 400 firefighters are trying to save the remaining holy relics and whatever structures they can.

Fire crews have been trying to save the holy relics inside — it has stood in the heart of the city since the 12th century and is the most visited monument in the city.

Officials say they don't believe the fire is connected to terrorism and say it may be linked to the renovation of the cathedral.

The deputy mayor of Paris says Notre Dame Cathedral has suffered "colossal damages" from a fire that started in the spire and caused it to collapse.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the site on Monday evening and has promised to rebuild the historic cathedral and says he is seeking international help to restore the Paris landmark.

Macron said a national fundraising campaign to restore Notre Dame would be launched Tuesday and he called on the world's "greatest talents" to help.

Statement from the Diocese of London:

Like millions of people around the world, we are watching with horror as photos and live video stream in from Paris France.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris is one of the most beautiful and significant buildings on earth, as well as one of the most famous churches of all time.   The scope of loss is beyond comprehension.

We pray for the safety of the first responders and for the people of Paris, as the fire rages in the heart of their city. Our hearts and minds are with the members of the faith-community.

During this dark hour, only days away from Good Friday and Easter, we are reminded that pain and destruction, in time, will be replaced by love and hope.
