An announcement from Ontario's Transportation Minister to widen Highway 3 is not stopping a planned protest next month.

Caroline Mulroney was in Leamington on Monday to announce the highway will be widened from two to four lanes from the Town of Essex to County Road 34.

Mulroney also announced a six-kilometre section from County Road 34 to Highway 77 will be repaved.

Ray Sterling speaks for a group on Facebook called Highway 3 Protest Bike Ride.

He says the pledge to widen Highway 3 as far as County Road 34  isn't good enough.

"From what I'm hearing we need this highway from 77 all the way through not 34," says Sterling. "Repaving two lanes isn't nothing if you ask me."

There's no word on the cost of the project.

Mulroney says that will be announced when the bidding process is complete.

The Minister adds work is already taking place with environmental studies, but construction will not begin until 2021.

Sterling tells AM800 News there's no reason the work can't begin immediately.

"All the environmental studies, all the land, everything's done.  Like why are we doing this.  Just start it and finish it, period," states Sterling.
