Walkerville Church Redevelopment Still Needs Demolition Permit

A Walkerville developer still needs a demolition permit to go forward with plans for a former church building.

Vito Maggio has purchased the old St. George's Church and Hall on Devonshire Court.

He plans to level the old structure and erect 3 upscale homes up to 5000 square feet in size.

Maggio says it was unfeasible to repair the church building and there was no interest from the parish to keep it as a religious place.

He says the homes he plans to build will be in keeping with the area:  "they're going to be 2 storeys, they're going to blend with the neighborhood, That's what's so nice about it I mean the neighborhood is so great looking already, so you're going to get a brand new home blending into the neighborhood in a traditional 2-storey Tudor style like you see there now"

Windsor Chief Building Official John Revell says the demolition of the heritage registry home was not opposed at the Heritage Committee stage, but a demolition permit has not yet been issued.

Maggio hopes to knock down the old church in June and start construction on the new homes in July.
