Windsor Hosting FINA World Diving Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021
Windsor will be at the centre of the diving world again.
The city will host the FINA 2020 and 2021 Diving Grand Prix at the Windsor International Training and Aquatic Centre.
The announcement was made at a news conference from the Canadian National Diving Championships taking place in Windsor this weekend.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says the event will bring more than 100 of the world's elite diving champions to the city.
He says the quality of the Windsor diving space was a key reason Diving Canada helped put the event together.
"They liked the facility and the divers liked the facility so much that Diving Canada came to us and said we have to use this facility it's among the best in the entire nation,” says Dilkens. “So they've come back and we agreed to host the diving Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021."
Dilkens says people in Windsor will get to see the top diving athletes in the world and adds, “There'll be a few more of them, the economic impact will be even bigger than before and it just gets to put this facility to great use and inspire the young athletes who train in it who are from our area, from Windsor Essex."
It's expected the event will bring more than $1-million to the local economy.
No specific dates have been set but it's expected to be in the spring of the two years.
