Windsor's Martin Draws Spear, Leads To Suspension
Windsor-native Matt Martin drew a spear that's led to a one game suspension for Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk.
Martin's Toronto Maple Leafs won the game 2-1 in the shootout on Wednesday night.
Tkachuk jabbed at Martin from the bench as the Windsor man laid a hit on Flames forward Troy Brouwer.
Martin says he didn't even notice the spear.
"I didn't feel it at the time. I guess if he's going to do stuff like that he should probably make it count," says Martin. "It's whatever, that's child's play. I don't really get involved with that."
Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock wasn't impressed by Tkachuk's move.
"You know, I mean — whatever. That's junior hockey stuff. He'll learn over time, but you've got to give Tkachuk credit, he played a good game, he played hard — no reason for that stuff," says Babcock.
Martin says Tkachuk plays with an edge that he maybe slipped onto the wrong side of.
"He's an effective player and he's always around the net and he plays a kind of chippy, edgy game — he didn't get any penalty calls against him, so it's kind of hard in a 1-1 game to really do anything about stuff like that, obviously the win is the most important thing," says Martin.
Tkachuk will miss the game in Montreal where the Calgary Flames take on the Canadiens.
