Winter Electricity Disconnections Halted

The MPP for Essex is describing legislation to prevent electricity distribution companies from disconnecting customers in the winter "a small step forward."

It was passed quickly on Wednesday after all three parties approved the legislation through first, second and third readings.

Essex MPP Taras Natyshak says this acknowledges there is a problem with the electricity system because hydro is an essential service, especially during the winter months.

"The main issue is the skyrocketing price of hydro," says Natyshak. "We see this as an acknowledgement at least that the system is decline and something needs to change but we are waiting for more systemic changes that address skyrocketing costs."

Natyshak says last year alone, 60,000 people in the province had their hydro disconnected. He blames the privatization of the electricity system for driving up the cost of hydro as companies want to make a profit.
