Alleged impaired driver hits several vehicles in Truro

A man is facing charges after police say a stolen truck hit several vehicles in Truro, sending three people to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say officers responded to a call of a stolen vehicle on Walker Street and then to a collision on the Esplanade around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Insp. Rob Hearn of the Truro Police Service says as officers were speaking to the driver of the hit vehicle, the stolen truck drove by.

He said officers tried to stop the vehicle, but "disengaged their emergency equipment" after it became apparent the driver was not going to stop.

A short time later, Hearn said the truck hit several other vehicles and then a power pole at the intersection of King and Victoria streets.

The driver fled on foot but was arrested a short time later, he said, along with an 18-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man from Truro who were also in the vehicle.

Jason Michael Tupper, 39, of Truro will face several charges during a court appearance on Monday morning, including theft of a truck, impaired driving by alcohol, refusal and mischief, as well as two counts each of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and breach of a recognizance.

Hearn said the 18-year-old woman, who had an arrest warrant from a previous matter, is also facing a new charge of assaulting a police officer, and will appear in court at a later date.

The 28-year-old man was released without charges, he said.
