Bearcats' Shawn Evans joins coaching staff of Canada East for WJAC in Truro

Two prominent members of the Truro Junior A Bearcats are joining the coaching staff for Team Canada East in this December's World Junior A Challenge at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC).

Bearcats Head Coach and General Manager Shawn Evans is joining as an Associate Coach, while Steve Lindsay will be one of three Equipment Managers for the team.

Evans says Bearcats owner Stu Rath pushed him to apply for the coaching position in July.

While Evans says he doesn't like time away from the club, he's honoured and privileged to represent the community, the Bearcats, and Maritime Hockey League as part of Canada East.

Patrice Bosch, head coach and general manager of the LHJQ’s Inouk de Granby, will be head coach of Team Canada East.

He and Evans will also be joined by assistant coach Martin Dagenais, head coach and general manager of the Ottawa Jr. Senators in the CCHL, goaltending coach Marty Abrams, head coach and general manager of the Trenton Golden Hawks in the OJHL, and video coach John Dean, head coach of the Toronto Patriots in the OJHL.

World Junior A Challenge Event Chair Dave Ritcey also announced details of three exhibition games taking place before the tournament begins on December 10th.

The RECC will host two games on December 8th, with the Truro Bearcats playing the Czech Republic at 3:30 p.m. and Canada East facing the USA at 7:30 p.m.

Amherst Stadium will play host to the third exhibition game, as Canada West takes on Russia the same day at 7:30 p.m.

Bill Schurman, Direction of Recreation with the Town of Amherst, says they were approached about the idea of hosting an exhibition game a few months ago.

He says they're excited to be a part of the event, especially as it coincides with the 50th season for the Amherst Ramblers and as they're working on a Fred Page Cup bid.

Schurman says the two towns are rivals when the puck drops, but not when it comes to events like the World Junior A Challenge.
