Thousands of students will take part in a mock provincial election on Monday

More than 15,000 elementary and high school students will have the chance to take part in a mock provincial election on Monday.

Students from 186 schools, representing 50 of 51 electoral districts, will cast ballots for candidates running in their school's electoral district as part of Student Vote Day.

The program is organized by CIVIX, a civic education charity that has held 36 Student Vote projects at federal, provincial, territorial and municipal elections across Canada.

Before casting their ballots on Monday, students had the chance to learn about government and democracy, and research the issues, party platforms and candidates through classroom activities, media, family discussion and campaign events.

The results will be released shortly after the real polls close around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
