Another seizure of illegal cigarettes near Amherst
Service Nova Scotia says two men have been charged following another seizure of illegal cigarettes in Cumberland County.
Two traffic stops were conducted near Amherst on Thursday, following a 13-month investigation by the department's Compliance and Special Investigations Unit.
The two men from Sackville, aged 37 and 47, were found in possession of more than 651,200 illegal cigarettes.
They were arrested and the two vehicles were seized.
Service Nova Scotia says the seized tobacco has a tax value of $179,210 in provincial taxes and $136,752 in federal taxes.
The men are due in Amherst Provincial Court on December 27th to face charges under the Nova Scotia Revenue Act, the Excise Act, and the Criminal Code.
The department says Cumberland District RCMP, Halifax RCMP, officers of the Sûreté du Québec Contraband Tobacco Unit, and officers of the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety and Justice, Contraband Enforcement Unit, assisted with the investigation.
